Fort Mill, S.C. — The community of Fort Mill is in mourning following the tragic death of Andrew Kreiger, an associate band director at Nation Ford High School, who died by suicide over the weekend. His passing has left students, staff, and families grappling with shock and sadness.
On Saturday, Andrew Kreiger passed away, prompting a heartfelt message from Chris Chandler, the principal of Nation Ford High School. In his statement, he conveyed the deep impact Kreiger had on the school and the music program, saying, “It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of assistant band director, Andrew Kreiger. We recently learned that he died by suicide. This news is both heartbreaking and difficult to process.”
The news of Kreiger’s passing is stirring emotions across the Fort Mill area, especially within the music department and the band community. Many students and parents remember him fondly for his dedication to teaching and his passion for music. Principal Chandler pointed out Kreiger’s remarkable ability to connect with his students, saying, “He was an amazing band director and had a deep impact on our school. He was loved by his students, and he loved them just as much.”
To assist students and staff in coping with the loss, the District Crisis Team is set to be present at Nation Ford High School starting Monday at 7:45 am. The team will initially gather in the band room and then move to the counseling wing throughout the day. They aim to provide support for as long as necessary during this challenging time for students and faculty.
Dealing with the aftermath of Kreiger’s passing, the school encourages families to engage in open conversations about grief and emotional healing. Principal Chandler urged parents to create an environment where their children feel safe discussing their feelings. The letter includes resources for families to assist their children in understanding and processing their emotions. “We will get through this difficult time together,” he assured families.
This tragic event has also sparked conversations about mental health support. Individuals who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts or crises are encouraged to reach out for help. The Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, accessible by calling 988 or chatting online, provides resources for both individuals and families facing similar challenges. There are additional mental health services available in both North Carolina and South Carolina.
As the Fort Mill community processes this tragic loss, plans regarding a memorial or homegoing ceremony for Andrew Kreiger have yet to be announced. Until then, his legacy as a dedicated music educator will remain in the hearts of those he touched.
In this time of sorrow, the focus is increasingly on the importance of mental health awareness and the available resources that can aid those in need. The hope is that through shared healing, the community can find a path forward.
