With a career spanning nearly 49 years in education, Epps has been instrumental in the district’s growth, serving over 18,400 students. He plans to assist with the transition until December 2025, ensuring the positive momentum continues as Fort Mill prepares for the construction of new schools to accommodate the burgeoning student population.
Fort Mill is gearing up for some significant changes as Chuck Epps, the beloved superintendent of the Fort Mill School District, has announced his retirement. This announcement came during a school board meeting held on February 4, 2025. Mark your calendars, as his official last day will be on June 30, 2025.
With a whopping 49 years in education under his belt, Chuck Epps is a familiar name in Fort Mill. Out of those years, an impressive 45 have been spent right here in our very own school district. Epps has taken on various roles during his extensive career including positions as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, and administrator. His journey reflects a profound commitment not only to education but to the community that he has served.
In his capacity as superintendent for the last 15 years, Epps has led the Fort Mill School District through a period of remarkable growth and achievement. Under his stewardship, the district has nearly doubled in size, blossoming to serve more than 18,400 students. This makes it the largest school district in York County. Epps’s tenure has correlated with Fort Mill becoming one of the top-performing districts in South Carolina, showcasing the hard work and dedication of both staff and students.
While Epps is undoubtedly looking forward to retirement, he isn’t walking away just yet. He plans to stick around to assist with the transition to the new superintendent until December 2025. His commitment underscores a desire to ensure that the positive momentum of the district continues.
Interestingly, Epps’s retirement announcement comes shortly after Rock Hill Schools Superintendent announced plans to retire on January 31, 2025. It seems like a season of change is upon our educational leaders. And with Fort Mill experiencing a staggering 10 percent annual growth in its student body, preparations are being made to address potential challenges in school capacity by 2028.
In response to this rapid growth, Fort Mill is excited to announce the construction of two new schools: Flint Hill Elementary and Flint Hill Middle. The elementary school is anticipated to open its doors in fall 2025, providing much-needed space for incoming students.
Chuck Epps has consistently emphasized the value of community collaboration and sustainable growth that doesn’t compromise academic standards. This vision is notably supported by a new early childhood development center, which is set to be developed on 34 donated acres in the Paradise community. This initiative is part of a larger $204 million bond referendum, channeling resources toward fostering early education—vital for laying a strong foundation for young learners.
As Fort Mill looks forward to new leadership and exciting developments, it’s important to celebrate Chuck Epps’ contributions to the district. He has not only shaped the educational landscape but has also played a pivotal role in building a strong community spirit. As the community prepares for his departure, there will surely be opportunities to reflect on his remarkable service and ensure that his legacy of excellence continues.
