In an endeavor to ease traffic congestion in the Fort Mill area, a significant road project is set to move forward. The hefty $145 million initiative has been approved from the joint resources of the State Infrastructure Bank and RFATS (Rock Hill Fort Mill Area Transportation Study).
This unique South Carolina Highway 160-Interstate 77 Interchange Reconfiguration Project is a first of its kind in the vicinity. It includes the construction of two flyover bridges designed to significantly reduce stacking traffic off the interstate and ease the movement of commuters in and around Fort Mill. The project is all set to reconfigure the intersection in the Kingsley and Baxter area.
In addition to the interchange reconfiguration, RFATS is also planning to widen the Corridor from Sutton Road on the west to Highway 21 on the east. The proposed widening from four lanes to six lanes is expected to enhance traffic flow significantly.
The heavy price tag for these projects is around $145 million. The primary funding sources are a joint effort by the State Infrastructure Bank and RFATS who have stepped up to ensure that the project proceeds smoothly.
In a recent policy committee meeting, the officials released a tentative timeline for the implementation of the project. They are eyeing a completion date in 2027 and are looking forward to breaking ground in February 2024.
The ambitious project carries potential benefits for the local residents who have been grappling with the pressure of traffic congestion. It also promises to be an infrastructural boon for Fort Mill, augmenting the area’s overall transport efficiency and paving the way for better auto mobility.
With the joint efforts of RFATS and the State Infrastructure Bank, a significant step forward has been taken to improve the transport infrastructure, an aspect that is invariably linked with the socio-economic development of the area.
