‘God’s Not Dead’ Sequel Filmed in South Carolina
The much-anticipated fifth installment of the “God’s Not Dead” movie series was filmed in three South Carolina counties last year and is set to grace the silver screen on September 12, 2024. Titled “God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust,” the Christian-themed motion picture was shot across several locations in Rock Hill, Chester, and Sumter in the summer and fall of 2023. The movie continues the journey of protagonist, the Rev. David Hill, as he ventures into the complex world of politics, running for Congress.
Transforming South Carolina into Hope Springs
Filmmakers transformed parts of Rock Hill and Sumter into the rural landscape of the fictional town Hope Springs, Arkansas. The team also converted Winthrop University in Rock Hill into the iconic halls of Congress in Washington D.C. Director Vance Null commended the warm and helping nature of the local community, adding that they were “inviting and resourceful.”
The film boasts a star-studded cast, including famed actors like David A.R. White, Isaiah Washington, Dean Cain, Samaire Armstrong, Ray Wise, Scott Baio, and Charlene Tilton. Several extras from rock Hill and Sumter were also cast, offering local residents a chance to shine on the big screen.
Familiar Locales on Camera
Several familiar locations from the Rock Hill and Sumter areas were used as film sets. The Winthrop amphitheater and the breezeway of the McBryde and Tillman buildings will be recognizable to those familiar with the university. Other filming locations include the streets of downtown Rock Hill, the Epic Chophouse in Fort Mill, Trinity United Methodist Church in York, the Sumter Opera House, and the exterior of the Chester County Courthouse.
South Carolina as the Choice
While other films in the “God’s Not Dead” series were shot in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, South Carolina was chosen this time based on the recommendation of producer Brenton Early, who had previously filmed his faith-based romantic comedy, “The Engagement Plan,” in York County. Director Vance Null confirmed that incentives offered by South Carolina for filming projects played a significant role in choosing the state for shooting.
Standalone Entry in the Series
For those unacquainted with the series, Null assures that “God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust” is a standalone film. It aims to provide an uplifting yet unconventional perspective on Christian lifestyle in today’s modern world.
