Sponsor Our ArticlesGreenville and surrounding areas are bracing for a winter storm set to bring light snow and icy conditions on February 19. With an 80% chance of snow showers, residents are advised to prepare for travel disruptions and keep safety in mind as temperatures drop into the teens. Meanwhile, Western North Carolina will see varying snow accumulations with advisory alerts in effect. As the winter weather unfolds, caution and readiness are key for an enjoyable experience in a potential winter wonderland.
As residents of Greenville and surrounding areas prepare to welcome a fresh batch of winter weather, the mood is a blend of excitement and caution. Meteorologists are keeping a close eye on an approaching winter storm that is expected to grace Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina with its frosty touch on Wednesday, February 19.
The National Weather Service delivered its latest weather outlook on Tuesday afternoon, painting a picture of potential snowfall and icy conditions. An area of low pressure, moving down from the north, is forecasted to spread light wintry precipitation across the Upstate. Residents may want to get ready for a scene that could resemble a charming winter postcard, though accumulations are expected to stay on the lighter side.
Areas lying north of a line stretching from Clayton, Georgia, to Greenville, Spartanburg, and Rock Hill in South Carolina, as well as Monroe in North Carolina, might get a taste of the wintry mix. In particular, those in the northernmost parts of Upstate, near the North Carolina border, could see light snow, with accumulations potentially reaching between a tenth to two-tenths of an inch.
The forecast brings a tantalizing 80% chance of snow showers to the Greenville-Spartanburg area before 5 p.m. on Wednesday. A light dusting may also be seen in places like York, Chester, and Cherokee Counties, where the possibility of ice or freezing rain adds an element of unpredictability.
On Wednesday evening, as temperatures dip, residents can expect rain and snow showers to continue briefly before transitioning to a quieter overnight stretch, with precipitation chances dropping to around 30%. Throughout the day, the temperature will flutter in the 30s, with nighttime lows diving into the teens and 20s, serving as a keen reminder that winter is still very much in charge!
Meanwhile, over in Western North Carolina, an advisory is set to take effect early on Wednesday morning and remain until noon on Thursday. Expectations call for snow accumulations in the valleys to remain under an inch, while ridgeline regions might see a wintry three inches. For the city of Asheville, approximately half an inch of snow is in the forecast.
With wind gusts anticipated to clock in at 40 mph, there could be some messy conditions from blowing and drifting snow. It’s essential for those living along the ridge lines to keep an eye on the weather as conditions can shift quickly in the mountains.
The snow spectacle enough to make even the non-winter enthusiasts perk up! The day begins relatively warm, with temperatures sitting above freezing but might take a nosedive as the afternoon wears on—this could lead to a delightful mix of snow and rain!
As for Thursday, a breath of fresh air awaits as the region is expected to transform to mostly sunny skies, giving everyone a chance to shake off the winter chill. The weather impacts made possible by this approaching storm may vary, so all eyes will be on the changing storm track. There’s plenty to watch for in the coming days.
So there you have it, folks! Winter fun is almost upon us, but a bit of caution is always a good idea. Depending on your plans, make sure to prepare for both the beautiful sight of a winter landscape and the potential hazards that come with it. Here’s to hoping everyone takes a little extra time for safety while enjoying what could be a charming winter wonderland right outside their doors!
