Rock Hill, SC – In a significant transition for motorcycle enthusiasts, Cox’s Harley-Davidson of Rock Hill has recently been sold to Baker VTwin2, a company owned by Carson Baker. The acquisition marks the end of an era for the longstanding family-owned dealership that has served the community for over two decades.
The announcement came in a formal news release on December 13, 2024. Founded as part of the Cox family’s extensive network of Harley-Davidson dealerships, Cox’s Harley-Davidson of Rock Hill was established in 2004, with the family having a rich heritage in the motorcycle industry dating back to 1961. The newly acquired dealership will now operate under the name Dog House Harley-Davidson, continuing its operations from the same facility built by the Coxes in 2006.
Jan Cox, the former dealer principal, explained that her decision to sell was influenced by her plans for retirement. In the release, she expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the loyal customer base. “We had a strong run catering to riders from York County, Charlotte, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, and beyond,” she noted. “It is our hope that the new owner will be welcomed as they continue this service,” she added, highlighting the strong connection the dealership formed with the cycling community.
Stephen Cox, a third-generation owner of the Cox’s Harley-Davidson in Asheboro, emphasized the legacy of the dealership. He stated, “Three generations of business ownership is hard to find these days,” underscoring how the family tradition has thrived for decades. Stephen expressed appreciation for the customer loyalty that has defined their business practices, saying, “Unmatched customer loyalty and a team who works with dignity is pretty special.”
The Cox family’s journey began in 1961 when Recil Cox, a dedicated motorcycle enthusiast, opened the first dealership while still working in a textile mill. This balance of work was part of their commitment to establishing a successful presence in the motorcycle industry. As they grew, multiple dealer points in several states on the Eastern seaboard contributed to their longstanding reputation.
The new ownership under Carson Baker aims to build upon the established foundation. Baker has acknowledged the importance of continuing the legacy of service and connection within the community. “We look forward to welcoming new and returning customers into Dog House Harley-Davidson,” he stated in the release, hoping to ensure that the dealership remains a central hub for motorcycle enthusiasts.
While the dealership transitions to new ownership, the Cox family remains active in their Asheboro location, focusing on maintaining the core values that defined their operations. Jan Cox’s sentiments reflect a deep appreciation for the community, stating, “The loyalty and dedication you gave us was abundant and appreciated.”
This change in ownership signifies not only a shift in management but also an opportunity to rejuvenate the dealership’s mission of serving riders. With the continued commitment from both the new owner and the former family, the future looks promising for Dog House Harley-Davidson and its place in the Rock Hill community.
