It’s that exciting time of year again in Rock Hill, where local high school athletes are not just competing but thriving! As we look back at the recent performances from our fantastic student-athletes, it’s time to celebrate the stars of the week. From amazing catches on the football field to speedy finishes in cross-country, the enthusiasm is infectious!
First up, we have sophomore Marloh Buford from Northwestern High School. She played a pivotal role in the Trojans’ recent victory over South Pointe, helping the No. 2 doubles team to a 6-0, 6-2 win. This win marked Northwestern’s very first team victory of the season—now that’s a way to get the party started! On top of that, she also triumphed in her junior varsity singles match against Clover, winning 8-2. Talk about a busy week!
Next, we can’t forget about Malik Clark, a senior wide receiver over at Rock Hill High School. Despite the team falling to Hartsville with a score of 49-30, Malik made quite the impression, racking up seven catches for a whopping 148 yards and a touchdown. With 27 catches this season, accumulating 343 yards and two touchdowns, it’s easy to see why he’s committed to Florida State University. Way to keep your eyes on the prize, Malik!
Moving on to the track, Alivia Cleveland from Fort Mill showed her speed at the @[Warrior XC Invitational](#) held in Pawleys’ Island, finishing the race in an impressive 18:05, taking home the runner-up title. Not only that—but her remarkable performance helped her team secure first place in the girls’ cross-country segment. Now that’s teamwork!
And then there’s Ava Corbi, a senior from Fort Mill who made waves (pun intended!) at the recent quad-meet. Ava snagged victories in all four events she swam, including the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Her impressive performances contributed to her team’s overall win, proving she’s one to watch in the pool!
Meanwhile, Christian Griffin from Buford had a strong performance on the field, despite his team’s loss to McBee with a score of 56-20. Carrying out two successful extra points and punting for a total of 161 yards is quite the feat. He’s certainly making his mark as a dependable kicker!
Looking at the Cougar squad, Jay McCoy and Kyle Robinson stood out during their games. Jay had an impressive game, catching seven balls for 154 yards and a touchdown, despite a loss to Clover. And don’t overlook Kyle; he made a splash for Northwestern with 10 tackles and two sacks, aiding his team in a 28-14 triumph over South Pointe.
In the girls’ division, Ava Shook from York dazzled with a 5K win on her home course, clocking in at 19:59.11! Not only did she claim the race victory, but she also led her team to a runner-up finish.
Hunter Willis, an eighth-grader from Riverwalk Academy, finished third at the “Fit to Fly 5K” with a time of 18:43, proving that age is just a number when it comes to athletic prowess. Finally, Bryanna Young from Legion Collegiate Volleyball showcased her skills with 16 kills in a 3-0 match against Dutch Fork, demonstrating her clear dominance on the court.
With such incredible performances from our talented athletes, it’s time to decide who will be crowned the Athlete of the Week! You can cast your vote until Friday at noon—so don’t wait! Let’s show our support for these amazing young athletes as they continue to shine in their respective sports.
If you want to nominate an athlete for the future, don’t hesitate to send in your suggestions. Recognition of all players is key, whether they are stars or hidden gems. Let’s keep the spirit of sportsmanship alive in Rock Hill!
