Hey, sports fans! It’s that time of the week again, where we shine the spotlight on our amazing high school athletes right here in Rock Hill. From cross-country runs to swimming splashes, our local talent is making waves, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Here’s a rundown of some standout performances from the past week!
First up, we have Jaden Alexander, a senior from Lancaster high school, who took on the 5K race and truly dominated the course, finishing in an impressive 20 minutes and 9.60 seconds. This stellar performance didn’t just benefit him; it also played a big role in the Lancaster Bruins securing a runner-up finish at the same meet on September 24. Talk about teamwork!
Next on the list is Addison Burke, a senior outside hitter from Legion Collegiate. In a nail-biting match against Weddington on September 24, she tallied a whopping 18 kills, alongside four aces and two digs, leading her team to a 3-1 victory. With a remarkable record of 18-4-3 this season and securing a scholarship to Eastern Kentucky, Burke is definitely one to watch!
Switching gears to the gridiron, we have Kason Cannup, a junior quarterback from Rock Hill. Cannup had a standout game on September 28 where he completed 17 of 24 passes for an astounding 271 yards and tossed not one, not two, but five touchdowns in a close 35-28 win against Indian Land. His performance wasn’t just limited to passing; he also rushed for 131 yards on 11 carries. This impressive dual-threat has been pivotal in helping Rock Hill maintain a record of 3-3.
Over in the pool, Mathias Hoerschgens-Ham from Northwestern high school is making a splash! Competing at the “Cross Town Throw Down” on September 26, this senior athlete claimed victory in all four events he entered, including the exciting 50 freestyle and the 200 medley relay. His contributions led the Northwestern boys’ swim team to a triumphant win, reminding everyone that practice certainly pays off!
Also on the cross-country scene, Gideon Nash, a sophomore from Riverwalk Academy, showed incredible grit. He clocked in at 18:53.20 to secure a runner-up position at Rock Hill High on September 25. Just a week earlier, he had a personal best of 17:53.80 at the Hare and the Hounds’ Invitational. Gideon is clearly on a roll and has a bright future ahead!
Another star in the pool, Adrian Paredes-Carrillo from Fort Mill, showed tremendous talent on September 26. He won the 200 individual medley and played a crucial role in the 200 and 400 medley relays, driving his team to victory against local rivals Catawba Ridge and Nation Ford. His strong performance secured the top spot for the Fort Mill boys’ swim team!
Last but certainly not least, we have Marvin Randolph from Buford football. This junior running back/cornerback had an electrifying game on September 28, boasting two rushes for 79 yards and scoring two touchdowns in a tight 41-36 win over North Central. Oh, and let’s not forget his defensive prowess—he made two fumble recovery touchdowns with runs of 10 and 85 yards, along with eight tackles. Buford may have a 2-4 overall record, but with players like Randolph, they are far from done!
As we can see, Rock Hill’s young athletes are truly shining and bringing their A-game! They not only represent their schools with pride but also inspire their peers. Don’t forget to cast your votes for the high school athlete of the week! Let’s continue to support and celebrate these extraordinary individuals!
