Latrobe High School Football Camp Begins with Energy and Excitement

Latrobe Kicks Off High School Football Camp

Latrobe, PA – The excitement of football season has returned as local high school teams kicked off their practices early Monday morning. At Greater Latrobe High School, the Wildcats were among the first to hit the field, beginning their camp with a series of energetic drills.

Practice started at 6 a.m., well before the sun rose. Players jumped straight into rigorous Oklahoma drills to test their toughness and set the tone for the season ahead. “We’ve gotten used to the early practices,” said lineman Cody Krall. “I get up at 3 a.m. for fishing trips, so this isn’t too bad.” His teammate, Braden Bronson, joked that he would typically be sleeping at such an early hour but enjoyed the chance to hit the field.

Meanwhile, the Belle Vernon Leopards, coming off back-to-back WPIAL and PIAA championships, opened their full-contact training camp with a serious attitude. Star running back Kole Doppelheuer noted, “We came here all business. We didn’t talk about the past.” Coach Matt Humbert emphasized the importance of maintaining expectations as they transition up to Class 4A.

Other local teams, including Hempfield and Norwin, also began their practices with enthusiasm. Coach Nick Keefer of Hempfield remarked on the familiar chill in the air that accompanies the start of camp. “It felt like camp this morning from the minute I walked out of the house,” he said.

As expectations grow, teams like Derry and Yough also adapt to new classifications while kicking off their training. Campers at Ligonier Valley experienced refreshing dew on the grass as they met for practice, with coach Roger Beitel reflecting on the excitement of the new season after 21 years in the role. “I have another opportunity to coach the best sport on the planet,” he stated enthusiastically.

Overall, the buzz surrounding the start of high school football is felt across the region, as teams prepare for their upcoming scrimmages this Saturday. With the season set to officially open next Friday, anticipation among players, coaches, and fans continues to grow.
