Friday night marked the opening night of high school football in the Charlotte area, generating excitement among players, coaches, and fans alike. Although public schools have yet to start their games, the night showcased several private school matchups that thrilled spectators.
One of the standout performances came from Hickory Grove Christian, who dominated South Wake with a convincing 35-0 victory at home. The team’s defense played a crucial role, intercepting five passes and recovering two fumbles. The scoring opened when Reed Rhodes recovered a fumble in the end zone, with the Lions securing their second touchdown thanks to an interception from Stephen Dickey, leading to a score. Kevin Powell made a significant play, returning one of his interceptions for a 36-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Another notable game was between Metrolina Christian and North Raleigh. Metrolina secured a solid victory, finishing with a score of 27-7. Key performances included two rushing touchdowns each from Alex Germano and Jeremy Williams, while DeAngelo Walker stood out defensively with eight tackles and an interception.
In other games, Cardinal Newman edged out Cannon School 24-21, while Charlotte Country Day won against Savannah Country Day with a close score of 22-21. Charlotte Latin had a strong showing, defeating Raleigh Ravenscroft by a solid margin of 52-20.
As the action picks up, next week’s schedule promises even more excitement. The Keep Pounding Classic is set for Thursday, August 22, featuring Independence facing Myers Park and Providence Day taking on Weddington.
Friday, August 23, will showcase multiple matchups at Memorial Stadium as teams like Hough and Northwestern clash at 5:15 PM, followed by Ardrey Kell against Providence at 8 PM.
