Punta Gorda – As the high school football season kicks off in 2024, local teams in southwest Florida have started their competition with some exciting games. The tournament began on August 15, with several teams taking to the field in thrilling matchups. Charlotte High School and Palmetto Ridge High School showcased their marching bands, adding to the electrifying atmosphere of the season’s first games.
This week’s scores saw a mix of victories and tough losses across the board. Notably, Naples High School dominated Gulf Coast with an impressive score of 45-0. Meanwhile, St. Thomas Aquinas defeated Bishop Verot by a score of 37-14. Immokalee came away with a strong victory against South Fort Myers, winning 29-14.
Other matchups that caught the eyes of devoted fans included Ida Baker facing off against East Lee County, where East Lee triumphed 45-7. Gateway Charter fell short against Canterbury with a final score of 20-34, while Port Charlotte secured a win over Riverview Sarasota with a score of 37-12.
This year, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has implemented a new reclassification. This change has created a different competitive landscape for high schools this season, making every game crucial for teams aiming for favorable playoff positions.
