High School Football Rivalries Heat Up as Playoffs Approach in Youngstown

Youngstown is buzzing as high school football playoffs loom on the horizon, marking the end of the 2024 regular season. Today, fans can expect thrilling rivalry games as several teams set out to solidify their standing before entering the postseason.

The big game today features McDonald (6-3) squaring off against Mineral Ridge (4-5) for the 80th time. These two teams have a long history, dating back to their first match in 1927. McDonald leads this storied rivalry with a record of 53 wins, 22 losses, and 4 ties. The Blue Devils and Rams will meet for the 64th consecutive year, making this the longest active rivalry in Trumbull County.

This weekend will also see Niles (1-8) taking on Girard (5-4) for the 81st time. This rivalry is rich with tradition, starting all the way back in 1898. Niles has won the series historically but Girard has already sealed its playoff spot. Meanwhile, the Holy War will take place as Ursuline (8-1) faces Cardinal Mooney (3-6) for their 70th matchup, with Ursuline riding an impressive eight-game win streak.

West Branch (9-0) and South Range (9-0) are also eyeing perfect seasons, hosting their final games before the playoffs begin. West Branch seeks to secure another 10-0 season against Salem (3-6), while South Range has a chance to claim an outright title against Hubbard (5-4).

In another important game, Poland (7-2) meets Struthers (8-1) in a battle that has seen both teams reach the playoffs. Lastly, Canfield (4-4) will be going against Boardman (5-4), with the Cardinals needing a victory to secure their playoff chances.

This weekend’s games will determine the final playoff seedings, with the results being announced on Sunday. Many teams are looking to make their mark before the playoff action kicks off.
