High School Football Begins in Springdale

Springdale, PA – Excitement filled the air on Monday afternoon as the Springdale Dynamos kicked off their high school football preseason at Springdale High School. Under the direction of first-year head coach Chad Walsh, 21 dedicated players gathered for the opening practice of this year’s camp.

Walsh expressed optimism about the start of the season despite the team’s youth, noting that the Dynamos only have two returning starters on both sides of the ball. “We might take our lumps at first, but the guys are out here ready to work,” Walsh said. The team had a core of about 16 players showing up throughout the summer, with a few more joining in for the official practice.

The team is looking forward to their first scrimmage against Jefferson Morgan on Saturday. “We need to make sure we stay healthy in these practices leading up to Saturday,” Walsh added.

Across the Alle-Kiski Valley, more than 100 teams began their challenges for the upcoming season. At Burrell’s Buccaneer Stadium, Coach Shawn Liotta led approximately 60 players in their first day of full padded practices. Liotta aims for a fourth consecutive trip to the WPIAL playoffs, having concluded last season with a 4-7 record and a playoff loss to Mohawk.

“For a coach, the first day of full-padded practices is so exciting,” Liotta remarked. He reflected on how far the team has come, recalling his first year with only 18 players.

Meanwhile, Deer Lakes and other key programs in the region were also buzzing with activity. Coach Tim Burk welcomed 52 players to Deer Lakes, marking a good increase from last year’s roster. The team made their mark last season by hosting their first playoff game in history, and Burk is optimistic about a third consecutive playoff berth.

As the preparations continue, all 13 Alle-Kiski Valley teams, including Plum, Riverview, and Freeport, are working towards securing their places in the WPIAL playoffs after falling short last season. Coach John Gaillot of Freeport, who is now in his 17th year, hopes to instill a winning culture in the Yellowjackets.

With the season kickoff quickly approaching on August 23, teams are focusing on refining their skills and establishing team chemistry. The traditional rivalry between Apollo-Ridge and Leechburg adds to the anticipation, promising an exciting first weekend of high school football.
