Selma, Alabama – In a heartbreaking incident, 16-year-old Caden Tellier, a quarterback for Morgan Academy, died after suffering a critical brain injury during his team’s first game of the season on Friday night. According to officials from the school, Caden was injured in the third quarter while playing against Southern Academy and was airlifted to the U.A.B. hospital in Birmingham, where he unfortunately passed away the following day.
Reports indicated that Caden collapsed after walking to the sidelines and received immediate medical attention before being rushed to a nearby hospital. Headmaster Bryan Oliver described Caden as a “shining light” who brought joy to the halls of Morgan Academy. Known for his talent as a quarterback, Caden had just started his junior year and was also actively involved in the school’s baseball team. Last year, he was selected to participate in a leadership academy at the University of Alabama, showcasing his commitment both on and off the field.
This game was especially significant as it marked the debut of Jacob Webb as the new football coach and athletic director, hired earlier this year. Webb had high hopes for Caden, stating that he expected him to be a leader in the upcoming season. Despite the tragic circumstances, Morgan Academy went on to win the game 30-22, but the victory was overshadowed by the incident that resulted in Caden’s injury.
Officials paused the game for medical assistance, but resumed play shortly after Caden was taken away. This tragic event adds to a concerning trend, as the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research reported 16 deaths of football players in 2023, with several being linked to traumatic brain injuries. Such incidents emphasize the ongoing discussions about safety in contact sports, particularly in tackle football.
As the community mourns the loss of this promising young athlete, the focus on player safety and the prevention of such tragic injuries becomes even more critical. Caden Tellier will be remembered as a bright star in the lives of many who knew him.
