Class 6A Football Heats Up as Unbeaten Teams Battle for Supremacy in Minnesota

Maple Grove, MN – As the high school football season moves into its fourth week, the competition in Class 6A has yet to see a team take a commanding lead. Currently, only four teams remain undefeated, raising questions about who among them could make a serious push for the state championship.

Despite their talent-laden roster, Maple Grove has shown some vulnerability, narrowly defeating Centennial 21-14 in a tense matchup last Friday. Head Coach Adam Spurrell emphasized that this close game could benefit the Crimson as they look towards the upcoming weeks. “It’s the best thing that could have happened to us,” Spurrell remarked, hoping the experience will prepare his team for future challenges.

Lakeville North is another contender that stands out in Class 6A, currently holding a 3-0 record. The Panthers have a relatively easier schedule ahead; the five teams they will face hold a collective record of just 6-9. They appear well-positioned to maintain their undefeated status as the season progresses.

Meanwhile, Minnetonka and Shakopee are also undefeated, both showcasing strong ground games. However, they face tougher challenges ahead, including a key matchup between the two on September 27.

No discussion of Class 6A would be complete without mentioning the seasoned Eden Prairie, with its impressive track record of 11 state titles. Additionally, Lakeville South, although having lost twice this season by a mere total of seven points, remains a team to watch. The competition continues to heat up as Stillwater enters the picture, highlighted by their running back Emilio Rosario-Matias, who has tallied 530 rushing yards and five touchdowns so far this season.

Among the teams hoping for a shot at postseason play is Anoka, which is scheduled to face Maple Grove this Friday. Mounds View, boasting a strong defense that has allowed just 13 points during its current two-game winning streak, will look to prove its worth against Stillwater. The Eagan Wildcats, coming off consecutive victories against Rosemount, are also eager to make an impression as they square off with Lakeville South this Thursday.

While all eyes may be on Class 6A, it’s also important to acknowledge the competitive landscape of Class 5A. With eight undefeated teams, this class might just have the strongest collection of quality squads. The top-ranked team, Elk River, has been on fire, averaging 48 points per game, while Owatonna has shown their defensive prowess by conceding only three touchdowns in their three victories.

As the season unfolds, one thing is clear: the chase for the championship in Minnesota’s largest football classification will only intensify in the weeks ahead.
