LAKE FOREST – As the fall sports season approaches, Lake Forest High School (LFHS) is buzzing with excitement and preparation. Students are gearing up for a variety of athletic opportunities, from football to cheerleading and everything in between. The thrill of competition and teamwork plays a crucial role in many students’ lives at LFHS, as countless young athletes anticipate their chance to shine.
Senior Nick Nassar is a strong example of what being part of a sports team can do for a student. During his time as a member of the Boys Varsity Track and Field team, he notably placed 3rd at Sectionals, qualifying him for the Illinois State Finals. His success, he believes, is largely attributed to the supportive environment created by his teammates and coaches. “Lake Forest has a special group of coaches who care about their athletes,” said Nassar. “That goes a long way to how the athletes continue to care about their athletics.”
The positive impact of sports goes beyond just winning and losing. Senior athletes, like Nassar, also emphasize the friendships formed through these experiences. “Having a supportive group of people around me who care about me makes me better,” he explains. This sentiment resonates with many students at LFHS, as they often find that their teammates become some of their closest friends.
LFHS Athletic Director Tim Burkhalter agrees about the importance of sports in students’ lives. He believes that engaging in athletics can significantly impact students both physically and socially. “We do a nice job of having a wide range of sports at all levels, and participating can help athletes in many aspects of life,” he said. Burkhalter urges new freshmen to explore various activities: “Try multiple things your freshman year to find out what you like and don’t like.”
Sports not only provide students a chance to compete but also promote a healthy lifestyle. Engaging in physical activity increases heart rate and releases endorphins, which triggers positive feelings and boosts outlook on life, explained health resources. This health benefit, combined with the rewarding social aspect of playing sports, makes participating in high school athletics a fulfilling experience for many.
As the first games of the season approach, the sense of community and passion for sports is palpable at LFHS. With dedicated athletes working hard and supporting one another, there’s no doubt that this year’s fall sports season will be one to remember. Whether they take the field or cheer from the sidelines, students are excited for what lies ahead, proving that high school sports are indeed a essential part of the LFHS experience.
