Rock Hill Man Sentenced for Holiday DUI Crash

ROCK HILL, S.C. – A local man has been handed a 12-year prison sentence for driving while intoxicated during a head-on crash that caused injuries to three people, including two children. The incident occurred on December 30, 2022, around 1 p.m. on Ogden Road.

Details of the Incident

Adrian Latwan Boyd, 41, was sentenced by Visiting Judge Alex Kinlaw of Greenville in York County criminal court. Prosecutors confirmed the sentence is the maximum allowed under a plea agreement between Boyd and the prosecution. This agreement followed Boyd’s guilty plea to three counts of felony DUI causing great bodily injury and child endangerment.

Injuries Resulting from the Crash

The crash left three individuals injured, among them Boyd’s own preschool-aged child, who was not secured in a safety seat at the time. Additionally, a woman and her grandson, who were involved in the other vehicle, also suffered injuries. According to 16th Circuit Senior Solicitor Matthew Shelton, Boyd’s blood alcohol content at the time of the incident was more than twice the legal limit.

Legal Consequences

Boyd’s legal troubles were compounded by the fact that he was driving with a suspended license, a status resulting from a prior DUI conviction. The court proceedings included significant statements from the prosecutor about the dangerous nature of Boyd’s actions, emphasizing the risks posed not only to himself but to innocent victims.

The Impact of Drunk Driving

Drunk driving continues to be a serious issue in communities across the country. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the potential consequences of impaired driving, especially when children are involved. The injuries resulting from the crash have a lasting impact on the victims and their families.

Community Reaction

The local community has expressed concern over the rise of DUI incidents. Parents, in particular, have voiced their worries following reports about the crash. Many are calling for stricter enforcement of existing laws to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Conclusion

The case underscores the severe legal repercussions associated with driving under the influence, particularly when it results in injury to others. As Boyd begins his 12-year prison sentence, the community hopes for healing for the victims and their families while advocating for measures to enhance road safety.
