Residents of Quail Meadows Trailer Park, Rock Hill woke up to a tragic sight on July 5 when the home of local veteran Roy Ives was consumed in an early morning fire. Formerly a sanctuary of tranquillity, the house Ives was planning to convert into a backyard oasis now lies in ruin. The home’s loss is excruciatingly painful for Ives, who had dreams of creating a reprieve to rest with a hanging hammock. Unfortunately, intense flames disrupted the peace and silence, turning dreams of relaxation to debris.
Despite being legally blind, Ives recounts being awakened by his cat, Angel, to the sight of a bright light outside. As he puts it, the entire area was aflame, with the fire rapidly climbing up his trailer. With some degree of preparation and crisis management wisdom, he managed to keep the fire from ravaging the entire trailer using a hose to knock it down before the fire services intervened. While the fast action salvaged most items inside, the trailer was a total loss.
In the aftermath of the disaster, a community that Ives spent years serving is now rallying behind him. Linda Dickson, a friend from church and one of many individuals he has touched profoundly over the years, has initiated a GoFundMe to aid Ives in his journey to finding a new place to call home. Sharing her sentiments, she expressed, “My heart just broke in talking with him because he doesn’t have a lot. He’s not a man of possessions. But he’s got a strong heart and he’s good to everybody.”
Known for his strong philanthropic leanings, Ives is an Army veteran who has selflessly dedicated his time and resources to supporting fellow veterans. Now, those in the community he served are looking to return the goodwill by coming to his assistance.
For the moment, Ives, who is very appreciative of the backing he is receiving, is sheltering at a motel. Investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the fire that gutted his home. Despite the extensive material loss, Ives remains optimistic and grateful for the community’s support. His indomitable spirit and strength have indeed shone through this crisis, a testament to his extraordinary character.
