Shocking Changes in Indiana High School Football Rankings After Week 1

As the sun sets on Indianapolis, the Indiana high school football scene has already seen some surprising shifts just one week into the season. The latest USA TODAY Network Indiana high school football poll, compiled by a vote of media members across the state, has revealed two new teams at the top of the rankings.

In Class 6A, the Westfield team has jumped up three spots to claim the No. 1 position. This rise comes after their impressive 34-28 victory over the previously ranked No. 3 Center Grove in the season opener, signaling their strong start. On the other hand, the defending state champion Ben Davis has taken a significant hit, dropping from No. 1 to a surprising No. 8 after suffering a tough 24-6 defeat against Cathedral.

Moving to Class 5A, another shake-up has occurred with Merrillville taking over the top spot. They rose from No. 2 to No. 1 following a dominant 27-0 shutout against Andrean. Meanwhile, Decatur Central fell from the top position to No. 6 after a challenging loss with a final score of 41-15 to Columbus North.

This week’s poll highlights the changing fortunes in Indiana high school football, as teams begin to find their stride. The rankings features a mix of familiar faces and surprise contenders, showcasing just how competitive this season promises to be.
