Kings Mountain, North Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as the Catawba Nation prepares to break ground on a magnificent $700 million casino resort! The official ceremony is set to take place on June 7 at 10 a.m., marking the start of an ambitious project that promises to transform the local landscape.
Situated just 35 minutes from downtown Charlotte, the resort will occupy a spacious 17-acre site right off I-85 at 538 Kings Mountain Blvd. This prime location is sure to draw in visitors from all over the region as construction progresses.
In early May, the Catawba Nation finalized a private settlement with former developer Sky Boat Gaming, paving the way for the tribe to move forward without any involvement from the old team. This included the purchase of additional land surrounding the temporary casino, which will be essential for developing new resort amenities like expanded dining options and entertainment areas.
Chief Brian Harris highlighted that this casino project is more than just about gaming; it’s about preserving tribal identity and fostering growth within the local community. The establishment of the resort is poised to be a crucial source of revenue for the tribe, while also creating job opportunities and funding valuable social programs.
You might be surprised to learn that construction planning and design have been bubbling away in the background during settlement negotiations. Fortunately, the initial financing for the project is locked in, so the community can look forward to a flurry of activity on site.
For those who haven’t visited yet, the temporary casino has been operating since 2021, featuring a solid lineup of entertainment options. Currently, guests can enjoy 1,000 slot machines, electronic table games, a retail sportsbook, and a cozy restaurant. Exciting news is on the horizon, as the temporary venue is set to expand in early summer with an additional 12 live table games and another 56 slot machines!
The resort’s construction will roll out in two main phases. The first phase, aptly named the Introductory Casino, will open its doors at ground level featuring 1,350 slots/ETGs, 12 table games, and a 40-seat restaurant. A sportsbook area will also be part of this phase, equipped with 30 self-service kiosks. Upon opening in early 2026, this phase is projected to create approximately 420 jobs.
Following that, the Full Casino Resort phase will unfold, which includes a stunning 400-room hotel and the rest of the casino complex, bringing the entire resort to around 2 million square feet. By the time it’s all said and done, the resort is expected to provide employment for an estimated 2,200 team members.
The Catawba Nation has chosen Delaware North to manage the resort, pending approval from the National Indian Gaming Commission. The architectural design will be led by SOSHNY Design, ensuring that the new upscale venue will have a unique and appealing look.
To support the influx of visitors, key infrastructure improvements have already been completed, including expansions on the Dixon School Road Bridge and the installation of new sewer lines, which will help manage the increased traffic and utilities.
The name of the casino, Two Kings, serves as an homage to the Catawba Nation’s rich heritage, specifically celebrating the legacy of 18th-century Chief King Hagler and the city of Kings Mountain. This thoughtful choice aims to connect the casino’s identity with its historical roots.
With all of these developments, it’s clear that the Catawba Nation’s new casino resort is set to become a vibrant hub for both the tribe and the local community. Keep an eye on Kings Mountain as this exciting project comes to life!
