Loss of Two Brothers Leaves a Community in Mourning
Rock Hill, SC – The heart of the local community felt a profound sense of loss as news spread about the passing of John H. Briggs Jr. and his brother Daniel A. (Bucky) Briggs. The brothers, who were originally from Portland, NY, left this world unexpectedly, with John passing on September 2, 2024, and Dan on September 14, 2024. They were surrounded by family at the time of their passing, a testament to the close-knit bonds that defined their lives.
Remembering Their Early Lives
John, born on November 7, 1955, was known for his adventurous spirit and dedication. Growing up in a loving family, he graduated from Brocton Central School in 1973. After finishing high school, he served in the United States Army, a chapter of his life that filled him with pride. Following his service, John found his calling behind the wheel, first as a wrecker driver and later as an over-the-road truck driver.
Dan followed in his brother’s footsteps, born on October 17, 1959, and also a graduate of Brocton Central. Like John, he embraced the lifestyle of a truck driver, creating countless memories on the open roads. Their shared experiences in the wrecker and transportation industries created an unbreakable bond between the brothers, who were always there for each other through thick and thin.
A Family’s Legacy
Both brothers were surrounded by the love of their family. Sadly, they were preceded in death by their brother, Dale Briggs, who passed away in 1972. John is survived by one son, David Briggs, now residing in Texas, carrying on the family name and pride. The brothers also leave behind their beloved sisters, Barbara (Russell) Briggs-Webb, Susan (late Billy) Heard, Pam (late Gordon) Cox, Terri Robinson, and Amy (Jason) Ziegler, along with a plethora of nieces and nephews who cherished them.
Honoring Their Memory
The community will come together to honor John and Dan during a military funeral for John, set to take place on November 1, 2024, at 11 a.m. Following this solemn occasion, a Celebration of Life will be held for both brothers, allowing friends and family to share stories, laughter, and tears in tribute to the lives they lived. There will also be a graveside service for Dan, providing closure and remembrance for those who loved him.
Giving Back in Their Name
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages those who wish to make a difference to contribute to the Lakeshore Humane Society in Dunkirk, NY, or the local Boy Scout Troop 126 in Mayville. Such contributions not only keep the memory of John and Dan alive but also support causes that were dear to their hearts.
A Community United
As Rock Hill, SC, and Portland, NY, reflect on the lives of John and Dan Briggs, it’s clear that their impact was felt deeply. Friends and family remember them not just as brothers but as compassionate souls who cared for others and gave back to their community.
While both John and Dan are no longer with us, their stories will live on in the hearts of all who knew them. The unity demonstrated by their family and the community serves as a reminder of the love and connections that persist, even in the face of loss.
As we gather to celebrate their lives, we remember that every moment shared, every laugh, every hug, and every road trip holds a piece of their legacy. John and Dan may have left this world, but their spirit continues to drive us forward.
