Sponsor Our ArticlesOgnibene North America plans to build a 144,000-square-foot machinery manufacturing facility in Fort Mill, South Carolina. The project will enhance local employment opportunities and bolster economic growth. With strategic location off Interstate 77, the facility aims to focus on producing steering systems for various vehicles. The York County Planning Commission supports the rezoning application, with conditions to ensure responsible manufacturing practices.
Fort Mill, a charming town nestled along the border of South Carolina and North Carolina, is buzzing with excitement as Ognibene North America has unveiled plans to construct a grand new 144,000-square-foot machinery manufacturing facility. This ambitious project will be located at the bustling intersection of Interstate 77 and Gold Hill Road, making it a key player in the local manufacturing landscape.
In a recent move, Ognibene North America submitted an application to rezone a 17-acre property located on Wilson Business Parkway. Currently, this area is a vacant, wooded lot that even features a tranquil pond at its northern end. The location is particularly noteworthy as it lies just behind the Fort Mill Ford and Fort Mill Hyundai auto dealerships. This spot is not only convenient for access but also strategically placed near three large distribution centers that boast a whopping 550,000 square feet of space.
The proposal showcases a comprehensive sketch plan submitted to the York County planners, detailing the new facility that would ideally stand at the cul-de-sac end of Wilson Business Parkway. This is an exciting addition for the region, as it opens up opportunities for local employment and economic growth.
Currently owned by Sonic Automotive, the property enjoys prime interstate frontage. Accessing the future facility will be a breeze with entry points accessible through both Wilson Business Parkway and Gold Hill Road.
Ognibene North America isn’t just any company; they specialize in crafting steering systems and components known across the industry. With this new facility, they aim to ramp up production, particularly in manufacturing steering systems for forklifts, tractors, vans, and even cars. This would mark a significant expansion of their North American operations, which are already based in Charlotte, NC.
Ognibene is part of the well-respected Italian manufacturer Ognibene Power, headquartered in Reggio Emilia, in northern Italy. With a global workforce exceeding 1,700 individuals, the company is poised to make a meaningful impact in the Fort Mill area.
The York County Planning Commission has reportedly shown their support for the rezoning request, though this recommendation comes with some conditions. They suggested that the county must establish a deed restriction within the next 90 days to limit the types of manufacturing activities permissible on the site. This deed restriction is crucial as it seeks to eliminate up to two dozen of the roughly 50 potential uses for the property—especially those involving heavy chemical byproducts and other intensive manufacturing processes.
Ultimately, the final decision regarding the rezoning will rest with the York County Council, which will require three votes and a public hearing before moving forward. While specific dates for this decision haven’t been set yet, the community is eagerly watching for any updates.
The proposed facility from Ognibene North America could be a game-changer for Fort Mill. As the town grows and evolves, this new establishment promises to add more jobs, boost the local economy, and strengthen a commitment to responsible manufacturing practices. So, keep your eyes peeled, Fort Mill—big things are on the way!
