Sponsor Our ArticlesRock Hill is set to honor Marlie Dru Sullivan, a talented 15-year-old dancer who tragically passed away, with the creation of a new performing arts center named the Marlie Center. This venue aims to serve as a cultural hub for the community and provide support for aspiring young artists. Fundraising events are planned to bring the Marlie Center to life, creating a lasting legacy of Marlie’s love for dance and her inspiring dreams for the future.
Exciting news is coming out of Rock Hill as plans for a brand-new performing arts center are in full swing! This center will not only serve as a cultural hub for the community but also as a heartfelt tribute to Marlie Dru Sullivan, a vibrant 15-year-old dancer whose life was tragically cut short in a golf cart accident in July 2024. The center will take on the name of “Marlie Center” to honor the young girl’s passion for dance and her dreams of owning a dance studio.
Marlie was not just a dancer; she was a dreamer. Her love for the performing arts was infectious, and her untimely passing left a profound impact on everyone in the community. In memory of their daughter, Marlie’s parents decided to establish the Marlie Dru Sullivan Foundation. This organization has a two-fold mission: to provide support for girls who need formal dresses for special occasions and dance competitions, and to create scholarships for dance schools, ensuring that Marlie’s spirit continues to dance on.
The Marlie Center has undergone a name change, moving from its original handles of Rock Hill Performing Arts Center and Arts Center at Fountain Park. Positioned at the north side of Fountain Park, right at the intersection of Main Street and Elizabeth Lane, the center aims to be more than just a venue. It’s envisioned as a gathering place for the community and a nurturing environment for young artists to showcase their talents.
The board of directors for the center is excited about partnering closely with Marlie’s family and supporters to ensure that her memory is honored. Their vision is to create a space that not only represents Marlie but also inspires future generations of artists. As part of the fundraising efforts to bring the Marlie Center to life, a golf tournament is planned for September 22, inviting the community to support this worthy cause while having a bit of fun! Look out for a fabulous gala every January as well, which will also contribute to raising funds for the new venue.
The architect team is hard at work during the design and development phase of the Marlie Center. They are assessing construction costs and exploring the best way to bring this vision into reality. The goal is to break ground on the project by late 2026, paving the way for a center that holds the potential to change the performing arts landscape in Rock Hill.
The community’s journey towards establishing the Marlie Center takes on even more significance in light of the tragedy that inspired it. The young driver involved in Marlie’s tragic accident has been charged with reckless homicide, a stark reminder of the importance of safety and responsibility. This fact has not been lost on the community, which now sees the Marlie Center as not just a venue, but a beacon of hope and creativity inspired by Marlie’s love for dance.
As construction plans take shape and fundraising initiatives kick off, the excitement for the Marlie Center is palpable. It promises to be a space where young talents can flourish, a platform to engage the community, and a venue that honors the memory of a bright young dancer. The Marlie Center is set to be a vibrant celebration of art, life, and the joyful spirit of a young girl whose love for dance will never be forgotten.
Stay tuned for more updates as this emotional and inspiring project continues to develop and come to life!
