Sponsor Our ArticlesAfter nearly two years of renovations, the historic McGirt Auditorium at the Emmett Scott Recreation Center in Rock Hill has reopened its doors. The grand celebration on February 19, 2025, marked a joyous return for a venue that has great significance in the community’s history. With modern amenities, improved seating, and a vibrant atmosphere, the auditorium is set to become a hub for cultural events and gatherings. The renovations not only enhance the experience for attendees but also honor the rich heritage of education within the Black community in Rock Hill.
Rock Hill is buzzing with excitement as the historic McGirt Auditorium finally reopens its doors after almost two years of much-needed renovations! The grand reopening celebration on February 19, 2025, was a joyous occasion filled with music, laughter, and lots of smiles.
Let’s take a quick stroll down memory lane. The auditorium is housed within the Emmett Scott Recreation Center, which has a rich history as the first public school for Black students in Rock Hill, welcoming students as far back as 1920. The auditorium itself was built in 1960 and named in honor of Ralph Waldo McGirt, who served as principal from 1938 to 1959. Unfortunately, Emmett Scott High School closed its doors for the last time in 1970, but the auditorium has stood the test of time, representing memories for many in the community.
This renovation project was no small feat. With a total cost of $6.3 million, workers rolled up their sleeves and got to work, ensuring that the auditorium is now equipped with all the modern amenities. The upgraded features include a state-of-the-art sound system, shiny new dressing rooms, bright stage lights, and vibrant curtains that have transformed the stage into a professional venue. Plus, the renovations included enhancements for accessibility, making the auditorium welcoming for everyone.
One noticeable change is in seating; the total number of seats was reduced from 1,200 to 762. While this may sound less, it actually allows for larger sets on stage and more comfortable legroom for the audience. Isn’t that fantastic?
The opening event featured the delightful talents of the Rock Hill music trio, Plair. Their captivating performances filled the auditorium and reminded everyone of the venue’s original purpose: to celebrate art and culture. It was a fantastic way to kick off a new chapter in the auditorium’s storied legacy.
And there’s even more to look forward to! Clinton College, a historically Black college located in Rock Hill, is scheduled to hold its graduation ceremony at McGirt Auditorium later this year. What an incredible way to honor this newly renovated space as a hub for community gatherings and celebrations!
Surrounding the auditorium, the area is also getting a facelift. Upgrades to the parking lot and the nearby playground are on the agenda too. The city council is not stopping here. They have approved funding for more exciting projects, including a new regional park and essential utility upgrades. The city is leveraging revenue from hospitality taxes to fund these enhancements, showcasing a proactive approach to community development.
Many in the Rock Hill community are thrilled to see the auditorium return to life. It’s not just a building; it’s a cherished landmark that has hosted graduations, reunions, concerts, dance competitions, and so much more over the years. The reopening marks a significant milestone for both the city and its residents, who can celebrate together in a beautifully renovated space.
In summary, the McGirt Auditorium stands ready to reclaim its status as a central hub for culture and community events. Rock Hill has truly come together to breathe new life into this historic venue, and the excitement is felt all around. Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming events because there’s no denying that fantastic experiences await in this beloved auditorium!
