Rock Hill, South Carolina – McKesson Medical-Surgical has revealed plans to lay off 179 employees as part of a major restructuring effort that also involves the closure of its distribution center in Rock Hill. This latest announcement comes just three months after the company previously cut 13 jobs. According to a report filed with the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, the layoffs are scheduled to take place by early March.
These layoffs were announced in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) report submitted on December 13. Large companies must file such reports whenever they eliminate a significant number of jobs. This means that the Rock Hill facility’s planned closure will directly affect the local workforce.
In September, McKesson’s earlier WARN report indicated that the company would let go of 13 employees by mid-November. When combined, the layoffs from both reports total 192 positions, ranking McKesson alongside Stanley Black & Decker for the seventh-most job cuts in York County this year out of 54 WARN notifications filed statewide.
McKesson’s official statement outlines that the layoffs and facility closure are part of broader operational changes aimed at improving efficiency and simplifying its infrastructure. “As part of these initiatives,” the company stated, “we have made the difficult decision to close our distribution center in Rock Hill.”
Employees were informed about the impending closures back in September, indicating that McKesson is following the legal requirements for notifying affected workers.
For those losing their jobs, McKesson has committed to providing severance packages along with “career transition assistance” to help ease the transition. The complete closure of the Rock Hill site is anticipated for March.
McKesson Medical-Surgical operates at 885 Paragon Way, specializing in the distribution of medical and surgical supplies to various healthcare facilities, including hospitals and physician offices. As part of its larger parent company based in Irving, Texas, McKesson Medical-Surgical has been a significant employer in the area.
In 2014, the company announced plans to invest $27.5 million in a new facility at the Riverwalk Business Park in York County, which was expected to create more than 140 jobs. The facility was set to supply medical goods to various healthcare facilities across the Carolinas.
This recent series of layoffs further affects the already strained job market in York County, where 385 jobs have been impacted this year due to layoff or closure notifications. Only Charleston, Georgetown, and Lexington counties have reported higher numbers of job cuts.
In the context of this trend, the situation is particularly concerning, as it highlights the ongoing challenges many local workers face amid corporate restructuring and economic fluctuations.
