Miami is buzzing with excitement both on the football field and in the bowling alley as various high school teams make headlines this week.
After an impressive 35 seasons at the helm, Adam Scholer has decided to step down as the boys’ bowling coach at Miami Columbus. Under his leadership, the Explorers achieved remarkable milestones, including a state championship in 1999 and an individual title by Robert MacKarvich in 2003. The team recorded 12 consecutive undefeated seasons and claimed 16 district championships along with several GMAC and Miami-Dade Youth Fair titles. To wrap up another solid year, the Explorers were runners-up at GMAC and placed 17th at state. Scholer mentioned in his farewell, “It has been an incredible run, and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” highlighting his passion for promoting high school bowling in South Florida.
Turning our attention to football, the Miami True North Titans delivered a powerhouse performance by shutting out Palmer Trinity 42-0 in the Region 4-1A quarterfinals. Quarterback Zac Katz went 11-of-15 for 157 yards, throwing a touchdown pass and scoring two on the ground. Other notable contributors included Kareem Brown, who caught a TD, and Kamari Bailey, who registered five receptions for 77 yards. On defense, Camaul King made a spectacular interception return for a touchdown, while Ricky Carter and Miguel Martinez also put forth strong defensive performances. The Titans, who now hold an 8-3 record, will face Miami Edison in the semifinals.
In other sports news, the Miami Columbus boys’ soccer team secured a close victory against Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas with a score of 2-1. Jorge Gonzalez-Tello was the star of the match, netting both goals for Columbus. Meanwhile, in another exciting Champions League matchup, NSU University School and Miami Gulliver Prep finished in a 1-1 tie, with Alex Sasser scoring first for the Sharks before Gulliver equalized late in the game.
As the season shifts into winter sports, boys’ basketball preseason tip-offs are taking place, while girls’ teams have already begun their campaigns. Most notably, Palmer Trinity opened their girls’ basketball season with a solid win against Coconut Creek North Broward Prep.
Looking ahead, the upcoming Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic is set to take place from December 27-30, welcoming teams from across the nation for an exciting competition.
