Midseason FCS Football Superlatives: Heroes Rise

Midseason FCS Football Superlatives: Heroes Rise

As we reach the middle of the 2024 FCS football season, excitement is building and the competition is heating up. Teams and players across the league have been making waves, and it’s time to highlight some standout performances. Here are the top ten superlatives — five for teams and five for individuals.

Outstanding Performers

The Pressure Player of the Year award goes to Idaho quarterback Jack Wagner. Wagner stepped into the starting role after Jack Layne went down with an injury in the season opener against Oregon. In his first game leading the Vandals, Wagner pulled off a stunning upset against Wyoming, proving he was ready for the challenge.

Next up, the Comeback Player of the Year is Stephen F. Austin’s quarterback, Sam Vidlak. Vidlak has had quite a journey as he bounces back after transferring schools multiple times. Now at SFA, he has excelled, ranking fourth in the FCS in both passing touchdowns and efficiency.

The title of Most Dependable Player goes to Monmouth’s running back, Sone Ntoh. Ntoh leads the FCS with 13 rushing touchdowns, with the majority scored within a seven-yard radius of the end zone.

For the Breakout Performance of the Year, Montana State running back Adam Jones stole the show in Week 0 with a brilliant 167-yard game and a 93-yard touchdown run, leading to an FCS-over-FBS upset.

As for teams, the Team That Lived Up to Expectations is Tarleton State, who is currently 6-1 and making their mark in their first season of playoff eligibility.

Thrilling Upsets

In the contest for the Upset of the Year, Weber State’s nail-biting win over then No. 8 Montana shines bright. The game featured a stunning kickoff return for a touchdown and several lead changes, culminating in a thrilling overtime victory for the Wildcats.

Defensive Dominance

Meanwhile, the title of Top Defense goes to Mercer, boasting the best run defense, passing efficiency, and scoring defense. The Bears even lead the nation in turnovers gained, showcasing their ability to make game-changing plays.

Looking Ahead

Lastly, keep an eye on Chattanooga as a sleeper team. After a rocky start, the Mocs have bounced back with three consecutive wins, displaying the potential to climb back into the rankings.

The 2024 FCS season is proving to be filled with action, surprises, and breakout performances. Fans and players alike will be eager to see how these midseason stories unfold as the playoffs approach.
