Milton Takes Down Buford in Exciting Season Opener
In Milton, Georgia, Friday night marked the start of the 2024 high school football season with a highly anticipated match-up between the reigning state champion Milton Eagles and the Buford Wolves. This game felt like a playoff showdown rather than an early-season contest, drawing in fans eager to see two top high school teams go head to head.
The Eagles, led by their talented 4-star quarterback Luke Nickel, entered the game as the top-ranked team in the SBLive Georgia High School Football Top 25 Rankings. Last season, Milton only faced defeat twice, against Florida’s Western and North Cobb, before embarking on an impressive 10-game winning streak that concluded with a convincing 31-21 victory over Walton in the Class 7A state championship.
As the No. 6 team nationally, the Eagles were determined to defend their title and start the season strong. On the other side, Buford, ranked No. 2 in Georgia and No. 13 nationally, was ready to challenge Milton. The Wolves came off an 11-2 record last season, with their playoff hopes dashed by Grayson, but they had a formidable defense, featuring several players committed to Power 4 programs.
As the game unfolded, Milton took an early lead, ending the first quarter with a score of 7-0. The Eagles maintained control through the second quarter, heading into halftime at 7-0. Buford managed to put two points on the board in the third quarter, but Milton answered back, increasing their lead with six more points. The final quarter saw Buford finally find the end zone, but it wasn’t enough to surpass Milton’s total. The game concluded with Milton winning 13-10.
