In a tense search operation that went on for hours on end, a missing 77-year-old man from York County has been located “alive and well”. The elation in the community cannot be overstated as Robert Davis, who was last seen at his home on Belaire Drive in Rock Hill, was found and is currently being transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
This successful operation is the result of local agencies coming together. Over the course of Sunday, search crews manned a command post set up across Northwestern High School. Agencies pressed onwards, even as darkness fell and weather conditions worsened, to use all resources at their disposal in finding Mr. Davis.
“We’re doing everything we can. We brought in helicopters to help us from the air. We have our ground unit on the ground with our search and rescue team. We’re using everything in our capability to find Mr. Davis and bring him home safe”, said a local York County official during the search operation.
The search effort was paused just past 8 p.m. on Sunday due to encroaching darkness and unfavorable weather conditions. The following morning, however, the operation resumed around Mr. Davis’s residence, culminating in the successful location of the missing person. With great relief, the York County Sheriff announced on social media, “UPDATE: 7:55 am – We have found Mr. Davis alive and well!! He is being checked by EMS and going to the hospital for evaluation.”
Functions like these are facilitated by the Silver Alert system, a public notification system in the United States to broadcast information about missing persons—especially senior citizens with Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia or other mental disabilities—in order to aid in their return. The decision to issue a Silver Alert is multifaceted, taking into account the individual’s health, weather conditions, and other potential risks. A Silver Alert was officially released for Mr. Davis on Sunday.
While the search focused near Davis’s residence, officials expanded their efforts to include surrounding locations, specifically businesses around Rock Hill and York. A community united in a combined effort showcased the power of coming together, resulting in joyous news that Mr. Davis was no longer missing, but found safe and sound.
This situation points to the paramount need for the safety and wellbeing of senior citizens, especially those battling health issues like dementia. It encourages vigilance and collaboration amongst communities to ensure that even the most vulnerable amongst us are never left to face dire circumstances alone. The town of York County can rightly take pride in this moment of unity and care.
