Jackson, MS – This week’s high school football rankings in Mississippi are shaking up as several teams have made significant moves after a thrilling third week of games. The top-ranked team has changed hands, and several others are vying for top spots.
Starkville has ascended to the top position after knocking off Meridian 28-15, gaining momentum as they aim for a chance at the state title. Last season, Starkville lost to Oak Grove in the championship game and are determined to return. They will face off against No. 6 Louisville in a much-anticipated top-10 matchup this coming Friday.
Brandon, the previous No. 1 team, encountered a shocking defeat against Clinton in an absolute shootout, losing 65-62. Despite this setback, they managed to retain the No. 2 rank in the state. Brandon’s four-star junior cornerback, Preston Ashley, continues to shine as a leader on a solid defense.
Madison Central has climbed up to the No. 3 spot after defeating then-No. 9 Gulfport 31-21. The Jaguars have had a tough schedule this season and are preparing to take on No. 16 Northwest Rankin next week.
After remaining unbeaten with a decisive 35-6 win over Hernando, Tupelo holds the fourth spot. They’ll continue their journey with challenging games against Oxford and other ranked opponents in the following weeks.
In a surprising turn, Hattiesburg pulled off one of the biggest upsets last week by defeating Oak Grove 27-21, dropping them to the fifth position. Hattiesburg’s next clash will be against an unranked Biloxi team.
Meanwhile, Clinton’s surprising win over Brandon has propelled them to No. 9. They will have another significant challenge ahead of them against Grenada, who recently beat Oxford 41-22.
The rest of the rankings reflect the intense competition across the state, with teams such as Hartfield winning 71-0 last week, showcasing their dominance. These rankings will continue to evolve as the season progresses, leading to exciting matchups and rivalries.
