Collins Cornwell, the director of student conduct, highlighted the university’s mission to empower students and motivate them to leave a lasting mark through acts of service. Winthrop University has been observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day since 2000, transforming it into a week-long celebration filled with a mix of remembrance and action. It’s a great opportunity for students to get involved and engage in conversations that matter.

Get Involved: Scheduled Activities

  • January 19: The festivities kick off with a food drive held in the residence halls, providing everyone a chance to contribute to those in need while also fostering a sense of community.
  • January 20: Later in the day, students can join a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. in Dina’s Place. This solemn event is sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., allowing participants to reflect on King’s vision and dreams.
  • January 21: The celebrations continue with a delightful MLK Brunch at 11 a.m. in Dina’s Place. Attendees can expect enlightening words from special speakers like South Carolina Representative Kambrell Garvin and Political Science Professor Adolphus Belk Jr.
  • January 22: For film enthusiasts, there’s a screening of the documentary “Counter Histories: The Friendship Nine” at 7 p.m., followed by discussions with faculty members Jennifer Dixon-McKnight and Crystal Glover. This event promises to deepen understanding of historical struggles and triumphs.
  • January 23: The event titled “Ima Be Me: Black in White Spaces” will take place at 11 a.m. in G02 Owens Hall. This insightful session will feature discussions on the experiences of Black students in predominantly white institutions, inviting voices like Theophilus Clark and Bry-Anne Jones to share their perspectives.
  • January 24: A campus clean-up event at 10 a.m. on Campus Green is organized by the Office of Sustainability, encouraging students to give back to their campus by keeping it clean and tidy.
  • January 25: The week of service concludes with a residence life food drop-off event, ensuring that the spirit of giving continues throughout the university community.
