Montpelier Launches Thrilling High School Winter Sports Season with Impressive Basketball and Hockey Performances

This week, Montpelier kicked off the high school winter sports season with exciting matchups across various teams, showcasing basketball and hockey talent.

In a thrilling game, Mount Mansfield took on Colchester, securing a 58-40 victory. Maysa Long led the Mountaineers with 16 points and 6 rebounds, while Rowan Butler added 11 points and 6 rebounds. For Colchester, Dakota Karpinski stood out, scoring 20 points, including four three-pointers in the first half.

St. Johnsbury also delivered a solid performance against Colchester, winning 59-40. Michael Rodriguez Guerrero led his team with 19 points, helping St. Johnsbury establish a commanding lead early in the game.

In other basketball action, Hazen defeated Peoples with a score of 69-49. Brendan Moodie had a remarkable game, netting 42 points, which included seven three-pointers. Meanwhile, North Country claimed a victory over U-32 with a final score of 58-48.

On the ice, Rice faced Colchester and triumphed with a dominant 7-1 win. Vincent Lanzetta shined brightly for Rice, scoring a hat trick in his first game, while Hunter Slade made 19 saves to secure the win.

In girls’ hockey, U-32 faced off against Stowe, coming away with a convincing 10-4 victory. Hannah Drury stood out, netting 4 goals and contributing 1 assist.
