Monument Academy Cross Country Team Shines at State Championships

In Monument, Colorado, the Monument Academy cross country team has made history by marking their first-ever appearance at the state championships. With only 122 enrolled students at the school, they are considered the “little guys” in a district that has established athletic powerhouses like Lewis-Palmer High School and Palmer Ridge High School.

The cross country team, led by co-coaches Tom Eller and Cathy Owen, has had a remarkable journey since it was formed. After competing outside of the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) for two years, they finally received approval to compete in the 2A division. This year, their dedication paid off when Matthew Start, a senior, finished third at the state meet, which is a significant achievement for the school.

Start is the team’s fastest runner, having posted one of the few sub-16-minute times in his division throughout the season. He has plans to run at South Dakota School of Mines after graduation. “I love running and every part of it,” said his teammate, Sharon Klein, who is the only female runner on the team. Klein proves her toughness by regularly keeping up with the boys, despite the challenge of competing in a male-dominated sport.

The road to success has not been easy for the team. Budget constraints and a lack of transportation for practices and meets forced parents to step up their commitment to the program. The coaches have balanced coaching responsibilities with their own running activities, showing a strong dedication to their athletes.

As the athletic program continues to grow, Athletic Director Michael Swendsen is focused on how to get a banner for Monument Academy. “Fundraising is key in building our ‘Field of Dreams,’” he expressed. Principal Angela Duca echoed Swendsen’s sentiments, praising her students and coaches for overcoming challenges in their pursuit of success. “I’m so proud of our cross country athletes this year,” she said.

The Monument Academy cross country team exemplifies the spirit of determination and hard work. These “little guys” may be small in numbers, but their passion and perseverance are monumental, proving that even against the toughest odds, accomplishments can be achieved.
