New Orleans – Taysom Hill is not done evolving. Entering his eighth season with the New Orleans Saints, the former BYU standout continues to adapt his game, showcasing his versatility during the NFL preseason. After two games, it’s evident that Hill is embracing new roles. He is now not only making plays at quarterback but is also taking snaps at tailback and fullback, while still contributing as a tight end and on special teams.
Teammate Jamaal Williams had positive words to share about Hill’s performance following Sunday’s preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers. “He’s a great runner, he’s doing his thing. He’s a great athlete. You give him those opportunities, he’s going to take them,” said Williams to reporters after the game.
In a game that ended with the Saints losing to the 49ers 16-10, Hill managed to score the Saints’ only touchdown while playing fullback. He finished the game with five carries for 21 yards, and delivered crucial blocks for Williams, who also had a solid performance with five carries for 32 yards. The duo has a long history together, having played at BYU where they recorded impressive stats, including a combined 1,978 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns in 2016 alone.
During the game, Hill and Williams had the opportunity to take first-team snaps together, demonstrating their established chemistry. Hill’s blocking even opened up a significant 15-yard gain for Williams on one play. Following the game, Williams expressed a desire for the Saints to focus on running the ball. “Run it. Run the ball. Yeah, we ready,” he stated, recognizing that building chemistry will be vital before the regular season kicks off.
Meanwhile, the 49ers sat most of their starters, which included All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner, who originated from BYU as well but did not participate in the game. As the Saints look to finalize their roster and offensive strategies, fans are eagerly anticipating how Hill’s multifaceted skills will play out this season.
