The town of Waxhaw, N.C. knows how to make restaurant news with its latest addition to its vibrant downtown scene, a new steampunk-themed English-Irish restaurant named Jekyll & Hyde Taphouse and Grill. Boasting an air of dual personality inspired by the well-known novella by Robert Louis Stevenson, this eatery marks its difference with its unique wood-accented warm dining area and a metallic, dark-colored bar.
After opening successful locations in Matthews and Belmont, owner Frank La Fragola decided to introduce his unique concept to Waxhaw. The distinguishing feature of this location is the in-house distillery viewable from the bar area. The Taphouse and Grill enjoys an edge as an English and Irish style restaurant, being popular for classic dishes including fish and chips, bangers and mash, and Hyde’s shepherd’s pie. The diverse menu offers other choices from burgers to steak.
Longtime patron of the Matthews outlet, Jim Zullinger, is particularly enchanted by the “brekkie” burger, a juicy serving topped with candied bacon, English bacon, smoked cheddar, provolone, and a sunny-side-up egg.
On stepping into this taphouse, visitors are greeted by an intricately designed gear fixture. Further inside, the décor equipped with different gears and cogs successfully imparts the steampunk vibe, beautifully integrating with La Fragola’s vision. The bar is a noteworthy spot within the restaurant as it houses more than 50 different beers on draft and showcases the on-site distillery, which is encased in a copper cage, to offer visitors an insight into the spirit-making process as they enjoy their drinks.
La Fragola’s major intent behind choosing Waxhaw as the spot for his new venture was to amplify awareness of the town’s downtown area. “We hope to bring in a different group of people that would normally go uptown, looking for something more upscale. We wanted to create something that is nice and fun that appeals to everyone,” La Fragola shared his vision. Echoing his sentiments, Zullinger sees this as a great opportunity to draw attention to downtown Waxhaw.
Jekyll & Hyde Taphouse and Grill is located at 216 W. Main St. in downtown Waxhaw, with access to street parking and a parking lot behind the building. It remains open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, until midnight on Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays.
A champion for the local community, La Fragola believes in bringing a spectacular product to an equally splendid town, aiming to make his newest addition a buzzing hotspot for residents and tourists alike.
