New Speakeasy Elsie’s at Kounter to Open in Downtown Rock Hill on December 13

New Speakeasy Set to Open in Downtown Rock Hill

Rock Hill, SC – A highly anticipated speakeasy, Elsie’s at Kounter, is set to open its doors on December 13. Located at 135 E. Main St., this unique establishment is part of the Kounter restaurant and food group, founded by Rock Hill native Rob Masone.

What to Expect at Elsie’s

Elsie’s is a 900-square-foot speakeasy that pays tribute to Masone’s grandmother, Elsie. The venue will accommodate nearly 50 guests, featuring a stylish counter bar with over a dozen seats. A distinctive aspect of this speakeasy is its street-front bodega and a concealed entry point hidden behind a door in a neighboring cheese shop. To access Elsie’s, patrons will need to know a secret code word, which will be shared on social media or provided at the adjacent restaurant.

Membership and Events

The speakeasy will offer 50 annual memberships, granting members personalized decanters displayed prominently on the wall, private access during select times, and invitations to exclusive events. Elsie’s menu will not only feature a variety of cocktails but also non-alcoholic options. Diners can also expect small-bite sweets to complement their drinks.

A New Chapter for Masone

The opening of Elsie’s marks another significant project for Masone, who previously served as South Carolina’s Chef Ambassador. This venture follows the successful launch of Kounter in late 2020. Kounter is notable for being located at the historic site of the 1961 Friendship Nine sit-in, a landmark event in Rock Hill’s civil rights history where Black students from Friendship College were arrested for being denied service.

Transforming the Space

Elsie’s has transformed 3,000 square feet previously occupied by an investment banking firm into a spacious and creative gathering spot. Masone stated, “We’ve focused on creating a truly unexpected experience,” highlighting the thoughtful design and unique ambiance intended for guests.

Community Engagement

Known for his commitment to the local community, Masone has engaged in various initiatives promoting restaurant week and tourism throughout York County. His dedication is further exemplified by the fact that he temporarily closed Kounter after Hurricane Helene to support recovery efforts in North Carolina, feeding line workers who were restoring power.

Looking Ahead

As the grand opening of Elsie’s approaches, locals can anticipate a fresh and exciting addition to Rock Hill’s dining scene. With plans for a second-level private event space set to open in the spring, this speakeasy promises to offer residents and visitors alike a distinctive venue for socializing and celebration.

Elsie’s at Kounter represents not only Masone’s culinary vision but also a dedication to creating memorable experiences that honor local history and community spirit.
