Rock Hill, South Carolina – Football fans in Rock Hill were treated to a thrilling night on Friday as the Northwestern Trojans took on their long-time rivals, the South Pointe Stallions, in what has become one of the hottest matchups in local high school sports. The game ended with a score of 28-14, showcasing not just talent, but the spirit of competition that makes high school football so special.
The Trojans rolled into District Three South Stadium with confidence and set the tone right from the start. Senior quarterback Finley Polk displayed his prowess, throwing for all three of Northwestern’s touchdowns. Polk adeptly directed the offense with precision, which made it hard for the Stallions to catch their rhythm. His excitement about the game was evident, stating, “We just had guys making plays all over. We ran the ball. The offensive line was working great, they were doing their job the whole time.”
Indeed, the Trojans took control in the first half, leaving the Stallions scoreless after two quarters. A standout performance from Polk allowed Northwestern to establish a comfortable lead by the half, making the score 21-0 before South Pointe could even get their bearings.
The scoring started in the first quarter when Zymier Gordon-Miles notched an 18-yard touchdown reception. The second quarter brought more success for Northwestern as Matthew Fish drilled two field goals, one from 28 yards and another from 36 yards, showcasing his talent to score without touchdowns. The Trojans capped off the half with a touchdown by Kameron Vance, followed by a crucial two-point conversion completed by Jayden Nichols.
But the Stallions weren’t about to go down quietly. Coming back from halftime, the team rallied for an impressive second-half performance. Senior running back Mason Hicks and senior receiver Caymen Finch each found the end zone, leading South Pointe to score two touchdowns and coming within just a touchdown of tying the game at 21-14.
Despite the momentum shift, the Trojans’ defense remained steadfast. Head Coach Page Wofford lauded his team’s effort, claiming, “We came out in the first half and did a really good job. We made them get out of their game plan early.” His defense proved incredibly resilient, shutting out South Pointe in the final quarter to secure the victory.
With this win, Northwestern improved to 4-0 and solidified their standing in the local rankings as the No. 2 team on The Charlotte Observer’s Sweet 16 football poll. The matchup marked the 21st all-time meeting between these two rivals, now with Northwestern leading the series 11-10 after this latest contest. As Wofford noted, “Our program is on the rise, and we keep getting better.”
In the coming weeks, South Pointe will look to regroup at home as they face off against the A.C. Flora Falcons at 7:30 p.m. next Friday. Meanwhile, the Trojans will return to their home field to face Nation Ford at the same time, eager to keep their undefeated streak alive and continue their journey through the season.
This Friday night showdown not only served as a game of skill but also as a testament to the enduring spirit of high school rivalries, with the community coming out to support their teams, creating an unforgettable atmosphere under the Friday night lights.
