This weekend, New York showcased seven of its young hockey prospects as they kicked off their NCAA regular season play. The focus was on Gabe Perreault, the team’s first-round pick from 2023, who played for Boston College in a highly anticipated matchup against Michigan State.
On Friday, the #2 ranked Eagles visited the #4 ranked Spartans and managed to secure a 3-0 shutout victory. Perreault had a productive night, recording the primary assist on Boston College’s third goal. He finished the game with four shots on goal and a plus-1 rating. His teammate, Drew Fortescue, the third-round pick from 2023, also made an impact, blocking two shots and playing solid defense.
The two teams faced off again on Saturday, where Perreault scored his first goal of the season. After trailing in the first period, he completed a 2-on-1 breakaway with a setup from James Hagens to tie the game at 1-1. However, Boston College fell short, losing 4-3. Perreault ended the game with four shots and three blocked shots, while Fortescue had one shot on goal and two blocks.
In other action, North Dakota began its season with a strong 5-2 victory over Providence College, where EJ Emery made his mark by earning his first career NCAA point with an assist. In his impressive debut, the 18-year-old defenseman ended the night with one assist and a plus-2 rating.
Colorado College saw Noah Laba shine with an overtime winning goal in their matchup against Northern Michigan. He had an outstanding weekend overall, clocking six points in two games, tying him for sixth nationally. Laba also dominated at the face-off circle, boasting a 70.7% win percentage.
Meanwhile, Western Michigan celebrated the first collegiate goals of four freshmen during their 4-1 win against Ferris State. Ty Henricks, a sixth-round pick for the Rangers, contributed with an even-strength goal and an assist over the weekend, as he worked hard in his first games.
As the weekend of college hockey wrapped up, anticipation builds for what these Rangers prospects will accomplish in their upcoming games.
