Ohio State Buckeyes Suffer Close Loss to Oregon Ducks Amidst Controversial Play-Calling Decisions

In a thrilling matchup in Columbus, Ohio, the Ohio State Buckeyes faced off against the Oregon Ducks on October 12, culminating in a nail-biting 32-31 loss for the Buckeyes. Following the game, veteran NFL defensive back Darius Butler shared his thoughts on social media, attributing Ohio State’s last drive struggles to head coach Ryan Day, along with offensive strategists Will Howard and Chip Kelly. Butler criticized their play-calling choices, particularly regarding how they utilized standout receiver Jeremiah Smith.

“Can’t put *Jeremiah Smith as the single X in that late game, last drive situation. Too easy to double!*” Butler tweeted, suggesting that a different formation could have capitalized on one-on-one matchups. Instead of exploring these advantageous scenarios, Howard often opted to throw into tight coverage, abandoning strategies that had been effective during the game.

As the clock wound down and the stakes grew higher, Howard’s decision to keep the ball on the last play—only to slide and end the game—highlighted what Butler deemed “*peak putrid play-calling*.” Nerves and Oregon’s defense undoubtedly played a role, but the questioning of Day and Kelly’s game plan remains relevant.

Since taking over, Day has faced increasing scrutiny, particularly due to the Buckeyes’ record against top opponents. While recent changes have expanded the College Football Playoff format, allowing for more teams to qualify, this has lessened the immediate pressure on his coaching future. However, the lingering doubts still echo amongst fans and analysts alike.

Overall, the loss has raised vital questions about strategy and execution in high-pressure moments and highlighted the need for the Buckeyes to refine their approach as they move forward in the season.
