Oregon High School Football Heats Up as Week 2 Showcases Intense Matchups and Standout Performances

Portland, Oregon – The excitement of high school football is alive and well in Oregon as the 2024 season continues with thrilling matchups around the state. Week 2 showcased intense competition and impressive individual performances, highlighting teams getting off to strong starts.

At Jesuit, head coach Ken Potter achieved a milestone last week with his 352nd victory, tying the state record. The Crusaders defeated Tigard 42-21, showcasing a shift from their traditional run game to a more versatile offense led by junior quarterback UC Davis commit Trey Cleeland. Cleeland threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns but also had some struggles, tossing three interceptions. Coach Potter praised Cleeland’s potential while acknowledging he has room to improve. “We will live with some mistakes,” Potter stated. “He’s a tremendous quarterback with a lot of potential.”

Meanwhile, Lakeridge had a standout performance with a **dominant** 55-3 victory over Barlow. While junior running back Ansu Sanoe has been impressive, the team’s defense has been exceptional, allowing just one field goal across two games. Coach Spencer Phillips emphasizes the team unity and hard work shown by his players, especially in defense.

Sprague’s comeback story became apparent as they started the season 3-0, largely due to senior quarterback Dukatti Witherspoon, who has thrown for 804 yards and six touchdowns already this season. Coach AJ Robinson credited Witherspoon’s experience from playing basketball in the offseason for his development. The Olympians are feeling confident, averaging 43 points a game, boosting their chances for a conference title.

Central also turned heads by improving to 3-0, with quarterback JT Girod leading the charge. Girod’s growth after a tough freshman year has helped contribute to the Panthers’ success. Coach Joel Everett noted the team’s commitment to training and improving their skills, showing promise as they prepare for league play.

Bend’s Lava Bears are off to a 3-0 start despite battling injuries. Sophomore running back Lewis Knapp made a significant impact in the absence of senior rushers. Coach Kevin Cooper emphasized the team’s depth and the critical role of their offensive line as they move forward.

Lastly, the Gervais Greyhounds continued their recent success with a 2-0 start, with junior Johnny Mariano proving to be unstoppable on the field. Coach JJ Navarette is pleased with how the younger players have stepped up following the team’s playoff success last year.

As the teams gear up for the upcoming matches, it’s clear that high school football in Oregon is thriving with passionate players and dedicated coaches, setting the stage for even more exciting games in the weeks to come.
