ROCK HILL, S.C. – With the arrival of Tropical Storm Debby moving towards the Carolinas, many parents in Rock Hill are wondering if the storm will lead to school cancellations as the district prepares for the first day of the 2024-2025 school year.
Parents like Sherleen Stewart expressed that they are keeping an eye on the situation. “Oh God, summer gonna keep on going, we’ll see about 4 or 5 in the morning,” she mentioned, sharing her thoughts about the uncertainty of school starting.
Another parent, Ellen Colberg, felt more prepared, citing, “We got some food, we got all of the essentials, got our school supplies. The schools that they go to have been really good about getting communication out. Who the teachers are going to be, what they need, um so I think we’re good either way.” Parents are finding comfort in the school’s communication about the upcoming school year.
As of 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Lindsay Machak, a spokesperson for the Rock Hill School District, indicated that there were no plans to change the schedule for Thursday. However, ensuring the safety of transportation remains a top priority in their decision-making process. “We work very closely with our local emergency management officials to make sure that roadways are going to be clear, to see what the winds are going to look like, to see if parents are going to be impacted,” Machak explained.
In the past, the district had to cancel school when severe hail caused significant damage and debris in the area, demonstrating their commitment to student safety. As the weather develops, many in the community are waiting for updates on whether school will start as planned or if adjustments will need to be made.
For those wanting to stay informed, following updates from local authorities and the school district is recommended.
