In a shocking incident that took place at the Islamic Center of South Carolina in Rock Hill, a man was stabbed and another was subsequently shot during a prayer service. The incident, which saw immediate police response, unfolded without any foreboding on Friday afternoon.
According to preliminary police investigation, a 27-year-old man identified as Travaughn West was present inside the mosque shortly after the prayer services had concluded. Reportedly, West was in possession of a four-inch blade, which he used to launch a sudden attack on a 44-year-old man.
Witnesses at the Islamic center recounted how West, armed with his knife, lay in wait for the unsuspecting older man to exit to the lobby. Seizing an opportunity, West lunged at the man, stabbing him twice.
An armed security guard stationed at the mosque acted hell-for-leather towards the commotion. Upon encountering the aggressor, who continued to threaten others with his weapon even after the brutal attack, the guard fired a single shot at him. “The suspect brandished his knife towards the guard, who, in response, pulled out his firearm and shot him”, said Muhammad Khanani, one of the founding board members of the Islamic Center.
After being shot, West reportedly rushed towards the bathroom, emerging soon after to escape down the street. Thanks to the attentiveness of those present at the mosque, a nearby patrol car was flagged down leading to a quick pursuit of the suspect. West was arrested just a block away from the location.
The injured men are reported to be stable. West has been slapped with charges of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and possession of a knife during a crime of violence.
The incident has left the local community dumbfounded. Warren Moffit, a local resident, was quoted saying, “You hear it all over the world, but this is close to home so it’s really mind-blowing to me.”
Police investigations into the case are continuing without any definitive conclusions generated thus far regarding West’s motive. Meanwhile, echoing the sentiment of forgiveness as instilled by their faith, worshippers at the mosque hope to move past this frightening incident while keeping the safety measures a key concern.
More details will surface as the police continue their detailed investigation of the case. All findings will be shared with the local community to keep them abreast of the progress in the case and assure them of their safety in the future.
