In a heartening display of corporate-social responsibility, PPG, a global supplier of paints, coatings, and specialty materials, recently brightened up the halls and classrooms of Rock Hill Applied Technology Center in Rock Hill, South Carolina. This philanthropic endeavor was an integral part of PPG’s Colorful Communities project, which aims to spruce up public spaces around the world. The project was accomplished in partnership with Team Penske, a well-known professional motorsports organization.
PPG employee volunteers came together in a spirited team effort, painting a stunning mural in the main hallway of the technology center and lending a fresh, vibrant appeal to two classrooms. Meghan Barrera, the PPG Business Director for Allied Products, Automotive Refinish, expressed delight at this initiative. Barrera stated that this project was a rewarding experience as it reflected PPG’s daily operations and resonated with their automotive-centric curriculum.
The mural gracing the hallway was artistically designed by the internationally acclaimed muralist and figurative painter from Osiris Rain Studios. Incorporating elements from the school’s automotive programs, the mural stands as a symbol of the students’ hands-on learning journey. The painting task, undertaken by the volunteers, saw the usage of over 15 gallons of distinctive PPG coatings including Pitt-Glaze, Sun Proof, Advantage, and Pitt-Tech paints.
In an encouraging rendezvous for the students, NASCAR Cup Series’ star Austin Cindric, driver of the No. 2 Ford Mustang for Team Penske, and his pit crew held a career talk about the racing world. Cindric reinforced his support for PPG’s Colorful Communities project, emphasizing the importance of contributing to causes close to home.
The school’s administration expressed immense gratitude for PPG and the Team Penske volunteers’ effort and investment in the institution. Jen Newendyke, ATC Director for Rock Hill Schools, stated that they eagerly anticipate ongoing collaboration with the PPG’s Rock Hill site and are optimistic about future opportunities that may enhance the students’ understanding of the automotive industry as well as guide them towards post-school success.
The Colorful Communities program embodies PPG’s commitment to enhance and beautify spaces where the company has operational bases. Rock Hill is home to a PPG site that churns out allied products beneficial for the automotive refinish industry, thus making this worthwhile venture a fitting tribute to the locale.
This benevolent act by PPG and Team Penske in Rock Hill manages to encapsulate the essence of community alignment and academic outreach. Endeavors like these not only enrich public spaces but also inspire students by providing them an invigorating environment that encourages practical learning and career-oriented growth.
