ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Presbyterian College’s lacrosse team is preparing for a grueling match against a familiar foe, the Winthrop Eagles this Wednesday evening. This marks their fourth encounter of the 2023 campaign against an in-state opponent and also their fourth meeting within Big South Conference territory. The game is anticipated to be fierce as Presbyterian College seeks to nail a 3-1 league record. The opening draw against the Eagles is slated for 6:00 p.m.
The Blue Hose’s previous scheduled match-up against Gardner-Webb last weekend was unfortunately postponed due to extended rainfall on gameday and the 24 hours preceding it. This resulted in delaying the Bailey Memorial contest until the following week. Due to the postponement, the Blue Hose, led by their fourth-year head coach Eric Clakeley, have had a week-long break to strategize for their Wednesday clash against the Eagles. Since joining the Big South, Presbyterian has yet to overcome Winthrop.
Presbyterian College boasts a decent record of 5-6 overall with a 2-1 in conference play, while the Eagles, on the other hand, are currently 3-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference. Winthrop’s lacrosse team, now helmed by Kara Concheck in her debut season, has exhibited a strong offensive game, scoring nearly nine goals per match, on average. However, their defense is a concern, as they’ve conceded at least 11 goals in almost all games averaging 16 scores by the opposition.
The eagerness for a victory is growing in the Blue Hose as they’ve yet to triumph over the Eagles despite their six-year history of matchups. Last season’s match was bitterly close, with a 9-7 loss, where the Blue Hose couldn’t recover from a 5-2 deficit in the final period. This Wednesday’s matchup is a highly anticipated one as a win for the Presbyterian team will not only break the string of losses against the Eagles but will also bring them closer to their first-ever conference tourney admission.
