Let’s take a stroll down memory lane. The Bleachery was a significant employer in its heyday, with nearly 5,000 workers bustling through its doors during the 1960s. Sadly, as with many textile companies, employment numbers dwindled, and the mill eventually shuttered in 1998. By 2009, a fire engulfed the already deteriorating site, leaving it more than just a memory for the residents of York County.
“Here’s this blighted thing, right in the middle of Rock Hill. All of this burned down,” reflects businessman Skip Tuttle, emphasizing the devastating impact it had on the community.
Turning Dreams into Reality
Fast forward to 2024, and Rock Hill is once again alive with hustle and bustle, all thanks to visionary plans from the city council, local businesses, and even state lawmakers. This collaborative effort has sparked a marine of hope, leading to the ambitious Knowledge Park Project, transforming the remnants of the Bleachery into something spectacular.
With an eye-watering $100 million investment, The Keith Corp. is spearheading the renovation of the Bleachery’s iconic structure, now known as The Thread. When completed, it will offer office, retail, and residential spaces, boasting about 1,000 housing units and new job opportunities for residents.
A Glimpse at Knowledge Park
The Knowledge Park stretches all the way from downtown Rock Hill to Winthrop University, filling the area with vibrant offices, lively restaurants, and welcoming apartments. Nearby, University Center has rehabilitated former industrial spaces into bustling hubs filled with student housing and recreational activities, like the Rock Hill Sports and Event Center.
During a recent tour, Rock Hill City Councilmen John Black and Perry Sutton explored the renovations taking place at The Thread, which many believe will be a cornerstone of this revitalization.
The Storyline Trail
Connected by a lovely footpath known as the Storyline Trail, each of these developments tells a story of resilience and innovation as it winds from Fountain Park right through to Winthrop University, sharing the history and ambition of Rock Hill. Despite these incentives, some developers have faced tough restrictions due to the historic nature of the buildings. “The entire site is on the National Register of Historic Places, which is good news, but that’s a challenge as well,” Tuttle points out, highlighting the complexities of keeping the buildings’ integrity while giving them a modern twist.
