Charlotte, N.C. – Riley Huge Named Big South Starting Pitcher Of The Week For The Second Straight Week
Winthrop University’s senior left-handed pitcher, Riley Huge, has been named the Big South Starting Pitcher of the Week for games played between February 26 and March 3. This accolade marks the second consecutive week Huge has received this honor, showcasing his exceptional performance on the mound.
Record-Breaking Performance
In his standout performance of the week, Huge took to the mound in the first game of a three-game series against Maine. He delivered an outstanding display, pitching 7.2 innings with only one hit and two walks while recording a staggering 20 strikeouts out of the 23 outs he secured. This exceptional feat is believed to be the all-time single-game record for strikeouts in the Big South conference and the most by any NCAA pitcher since 2017.
Setting New Records
Huge’s remarkable 20 strikeouts in a single game surpassed the Winthrop University’s previous record held by Kevin Slowey. His dominant performance against Maine included striking out the first six hitters he faced and factoring into 22 out of 23 outs, comprising of 20 strikeouts and two groundouts back to the mound.
