On a special segment of the Hall of Fame series, Winthrop University Athletics gives us a glimpse into the life of Robbie Waldrop, a key figure in Winthrop’s 1998-99 Men’s Basketball team. The team became the first in the school’s history to qualify for the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Life After Basketball

After graduating, Waldrop sought an occupation that could mimic the adrenaline rush of being on the basketball court. Despite attempts at teaching and coaching, the thrill was lacking. His exploration led him to law enforcement, where after his first ride-along, he was hooked. For the last 20 years, Waldrop has been faithfully serving in the Gaston County Police Department, having risen through the ranks to his current position as Captain.

Changing Tides at Winthrop University

When Waldrop was with the Eagles, the team was coming from a 7-20 record from the previous year and faced low expectations. However, changes awaited in the horizon with Gregg Marshall’s arrival. Waldrop corroborates that things felt different from the beginning, which led to a winning mentality and a sense of camaraderie that helped shape the team positively. As a sophomore guard, Waldrop contributed significantly with his exceptional long-range shooting, registering 123 shots from behind the arc during his career.

Perseverance and Determination

There came a time when Waldrop’s participation in the crucial tournament seemed doubtful due to a bruised spleen. After missing two regular season games, he sought a second medical opinion for his condition. With the all-clear from the medics, Waldrop returned to the court, contributing towards significant victories in the Big South Conference championship.

Good Memories and a Great Experience

Despite the ultimate loss to the top-seeded Auburn Tigers, Waldrop has fond memories of his time in Indianapolis. He recalls the magnificent atmosphere, the size of the crowd that came to watch practice and learning from how the top teams carried themselves.

As Waldrop continues to make a difference on and off the field, his life is proof that sportsmen can excel in diverse fields, and his legacy at Winthrop University Athletics is undoubtedly secure.
