Rock Hill Allots $500,000 for Storm Recovery Efforts

Legislators in South Carolina have formally announced their decision to allocate a sum of $500,000 to the city of Rock Hill. The funding is specifically for recovery efforts associated with the severe thunderstorms that hit York County in late April. The storms led to widespread damage across Rock Hill and York County on April 20, wrecking numerous homes and businesses. The storm damage funds were approved by the South Carolina House as part of the state budget.

Community Shows Support in The Face of Tragedy

“In the face of tragedy, the people of Rock Hill join together to support one another,” stated Mayor John Gettys. The local representatives, with Rep. John King at the helm of the efforts, played a crucial role in securing this funding through the state budget process.

Damages from the Storm

The supercell thunderstorm swept across York County in April, boasting winds up to 90 mph, equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane. These strong winds toppled trees and damaged homes, leaving the community in a state of destruction. Large hail stones, at least 2 inches in diameter, were also reported, according to local surveyors. York County Emergency Management disclosed that the storms induced approximately $5 million worth of damage, including city- and county-owned vehicles.

Financial Helping Hand Towards Rebuilding Efforts

Mayor Gettys announced that more than $52,000 was raised in donations to assist the Rebuild Southside efforts. Further, the money coming from the state will contribute towards the repair and renovation of over 20 additional homes that qualify for assistance. Rock Hill officials predict that the combined funds should be adequate to restore about 60 homes.

Positive Responses From Local Community

Receiving much praise for the community’s resilience and unified effort are House representative Brandon Guffey who voiced his admiration. “One of the reasons I love Rock Hill is how the community always pulls together to help those in need. This storm inflicted considerable damage, especially for those owning generational homes here. Advocating for assistance from the state was imperative,” he commented.
