Winthrop head men’s basketball coach Mark Prosser has announced the return of Monty Sanders to the Eagles’ coaching staff as Associate Head Coach. Sanders rejoins Winthrop after a successful two-year tenure as an assistant coach with Campbell men’s basketball, where he helped guide the team to the Big South Conference Championship game in his first season.
Coach Prosser expressed his excitement about Sanders’ return, stating, “We are extremely excited to welcome Monty back to our program as Associate Head Coach. He possesses a wealth of experience, combined with an intimate understanding of our program here at Winthrop. He is a wonderful teacher of the game of basketball and will continue to be a tremendous mentor for our student-athletes.”
In Sanders’ previous role at Winthrop as the Director of Player Development, the team posted a record of 23-9 and advanced to the Big South Conference Championship game. Sanders will resume his position as the offensive coordinator for the upcoming 2024-25 season, bringing with him a wealth of experience and expertise.
Prior to his time at Campbell and Winthrop, Sanders served as an assistant coach at UNC Wilmington and spent two successful seasons with Prosser at Western Carolina. During his tenure at Western Carolina, Sanders played a pivotal role in the team’s significant turnaround, helping them win 12 more games than the previous season.
Sanders’ coaching career began at his alma mater, Elon, where he worked as the director of operations for the men’s basketball program. He later transitioned to an assistant coaching role, where he played a key part in the development of standout players like Lucas Troutman and Tyler Seibring.
With his well-rounded coaching background and proven track record of success, Sanders’ return to Winthrop as Associate Head Coach signals a bright future for the men’s basketball program. Fans and supporters are eager to see the impact he will make in the upcoming seasons.
