In a heartwarming event in Rock Hill, an 11-year-old boy’s biggest wish came true recently. Gunnar Gonzales, who had been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at birth, had his dream fulfilled by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Gunnar is like any other boy of his age group, with a burning passion for baseball and an admiration for Los Angeles Dodgers’ star first baseman, Freddie Freeman. However, the odds were stacked against him from birth when he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder that causes persistent lung infections and hampers digestion.
Despite dealing with this health condition, which often results in a multitude of related complications, Gunnar has managed to stay dedicated to his love for baseball. His resilience truly stands out as he juggles his treatments and his dedication to his favourite sport.
Cystic fibrosis leads to the formation of mucus thicker and stickier than the average person. It affects nearly 40,000 individuals across the country and currently has no known cure. This, however, hasn’t kept Gunnar from pursuing his passion for baseball. But the disease undoubtedly poses daily struggles and discomfort to him.
Daily treatments, pills, and constant medical attention are part of Gunnar’s everyday routine. His inherent courage to combat the ailment while immersing himself in his favorite activity is a source of inspiration for many.
Considering Gunnar’s continuous battle with cystic fibrosis and his love for baseball, the medical team at Levine Children’s Hospital, where he receives treatment, suggested his family reach out to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This remarkable foundation fulfills the wishes of children diagnosed with critical illnesses. In this case, it was Gunnar’s wish to meet his baseball hero, Freddie Freeman.
On July 1, the family got a call from Make-A-Wish announcing that Gunnar’s wish would be granted. The elated family travelled to Los Angeles where young Gunnar had the chance to play a game of catch with his idol, Freddie Freeman.
This experience was made possible thanks to the cooperation of Freddie Freeman, who showed his support for such a noble cause, and the facilitation of ESPN with travel and accommodation arrangements. Gunnar’s dream turned into an unforgettable memory, giving him the strength to continue his fight against cystic fibrosis.
This heartening story is a testament to the power of dreams and motivation for those who are struggling against the odds but remain passionately dedicated to their interests and hobbies.
